PERI-ORAL LINES

PERI-ORAL LINES / LIPSTICK LINES

Perioral lines are the vertical lines that appear from the border of the lip extending up towards the nose. These are also called lipstick or smoker’s lines.

There are several reasons why perioral lines form; Intrinsic ageing, which leads to loss of collagen, hyaluronic acid and a decreased skin tone. As we age, loss of collagen and reduced tone of the Orbicularis oris muscle (circular muscle around the mouth) and the loss of elasticity and support for the tissues in the area, can lead to the appearance of perioral or ‘smoker’s lines. Extrinsic factors such as UV exposure, sun-bed use and smoking also contribute to increased ageing in the skin and development of wrinkles around the mouth area.

Are you looking for the treatment of Smoker’s lines or Peri-oral lines?

Here at MKSkin clinic, Milton Keynes, we offer treatment for peri-oral lines. These lines can be reduced by controlled injections of botulinum toxin (Botox) in that area. Botulinum toxin is a neuromodulator that works by relaxing the muscle of facial expression which through repetitive movement forms a wrinkle in the overlying skin.  The Orbicularis oris is a circular muscle which puckers the lips. At MKSkin clinic, Milton Keynes, we offer precise administration of Botox into the orbicularis oris muscle that will soften the vertical lip lines. It is a simple office procedure taking about 10 minutes with minimal pain and downtime.  Botox takes about 5 days to work and lasts 3-4 months in this area. For deeper lines, Botulinum toxin can also be combined with another modality such a dermal filler for a better effect.
